PETER SNELL CHAMPION: Peter Snell's three Olympic gold medals and six world records have earned him the accolade of Sports Champion of the Century.
DOCTORS LEVIES: Patients will pay more if the Government decides to collect the medical misadventure premium from doctors and other health professionals.
ART BUFF GIFT: A financial guru and fanatical lover of the arts has left more than $1 million to the Auckland Art Gallery - the single largest bequest for the acquisition of artworks.
WINZ FOUL-UP:: Students relying on student loans to pay fees and rent are panicking as classes and bills loom with no money in sight. Delays in processing loan applications, which emerged at Canterbury University early this week, have moved up the country as enrolments started to peak in Auckland and Hamilton yesterday.
TOUGH QUESTIONS: Christine Rankin read the question on everyone's lips yesterday and saved them the trouble of asking it. "Before we take any questions," she told a press conference, "I want to answer one of the questions that I'm positive you are going to ask me: Am I going to resign? "I want to tell you very clearly that is not on my agenda."
BROOKE MARRIAGE: Former All Black star Zinzan Brooke will tomorrow marry his longtime partner, former Auckland Blues choreographer and television presenter Alison Imm.
RACE WIDOW: The widow of New Zealand motor racing legend Bruce McLaren has failed in her court bid to get $500,000 from her dead husband's former manager and close friend, Aucklander Phil Kerr.
HALBERG AWARDS: Royalty from the throne mingled with royalty from the track, field and pool last night at the greatest gathering of sports stars seen in this country.
TANZCOS ON THE POT:: Nandor Tanczos faced the wrath of his parliamentary colleagues yesterday with demands that he name the MPs he claims to have seen drunk. In an unusual move, MPs gave him a chance to identify the people under cover of parliamentary privilege. But he refused to do so.
STARVING YACHT CREWS: There is a split in the Team New Zealand sailing crew - half of them are eating like pigs, the others are starving. A strict weight regime has been controlling the sailors' appetites in the final buildup to the first America's Cup match tomorrow.
ITALIAN CHARM: Prada's 17th man, Guidi Renzo, was back on the water yesterday spreading a little more magic - this time with children from the Child Cancer Foundation.
LIFE OF BRIAN: Brian Edwards yesterday ended any chance of returning as host of the Saturday Top o' the Morning show by walking out of contract talks with Radio New Zealand.
3 FRIGATE NAVY: Naval planners will no longer work on the basis of a three-frigate fleet, says Defence Minister Mark Burton. He told an Institute of International Affairs seminar at Victoria University in Wellington that the Government believed the Defence Force was spread too thinly and the Army, Navy and Air Force were inadequately equipped.
WOMEN’S MAGS: New Zealand women's appetite for celebrity-based magazines continues to shrink. Audited figures for the six months to the end of December show sales of gossipy magazines such as Woman's Day, the New Zealand Woman's Weekly and the Australian Women's Weekly have continued to decline over the past year, in favour of titles featuring food, homes and gardening.
EDITORIAL – ACC: There are few loftier perches in society than that upon which doctors sit. Few begrudge the medical profession its status, privilege and earnings. Most view the acclaim as fair reward for skills that save lives and make living a great deal easier. That bounteous goodwill has, however, taken something of a battering lately with the airing of cases of medical negligence or carelessness. It suffers anew with the Herald's disclosure of details of the ACC account set up to compensate the victims of misadventure.
