TVNZ ROW The Government is seeking further information from the board of Television New Zealand after the Prime Minister says she received conflicting advice from them over whether they knew the details of the contract TVNZ was offering John Hawkesby. TV3 is considering legal advice to decide whether TVNZ illegally enticed Mr Haweksby to leave his TV3 contract.
TELECOM DROP: Telecom NZ has recorded a drop in profits of 2.5 per cent for the last business quarter, but Telecom’s Chief Executive says underlying growth over the period has been strong.
GREENHOUSE GAS: The government has committed itself to ratifying an international agreement to stopping greenhouse gas emissions. Environment Minister Marian Hobbs said she would ratify the 1997 Kyoto Protocol but was not specific when.
KEELS REVEALED: Team New Zealand and Team Prada have both revealed the keels that they would use to contest the America’s Cup finals. Races start on Saturday.
AFGHANS RETURN: Just under half the passengers who were stuck on a hijacked Afghan aircraft have returned home to a heroes welcome in Afghanistan. Seventy-three passengers returned. Meanwhile 13 Afghan charged with hijacking are to appear in a British court next month.
PINOCHET RULING: A group of judges will rule on whether British Home Secretary Jack Straw broke the law when he refused to make public the results of former Chilean Dictator Augusto Pinochet’s medical inquiry.
JOERG HAIDER: Austria’s Foreign Minister has asked the European Union not to judge Austria on it’s new elected minister far right wing leader Joerg Haider after the Union put diplomatic freeze on the country.
SAFTEY REVIEW: Watersafety NZ is reviewing the guidelines on swimming at school camps after three children have died in two incidents while camping in the past week.
WRONG CARD: Wellington Maternity Services said it mistakenly sent congratulatory messages to over 50 women who had miscarriages or terminated pregnancies.
SCREAMING TEENS: A high court jury has heard graphic evidence on how teenagers screamed in support as an angry van-driver attempted to murder a policeman.
BANK OF WAREHOUSE: The Warehouse retailer is reported to be considering its own banking service and is currently in talks with finance company ANZ.
