Hawkesby Payout – NRL Drowning – Homicide Investigation - America’s Cup – Italian Invite – Crewe Murders - Child Killings – Afghan Hijack
HAWKESBY PAYOUT: High court documents have revealed sacked former broadcaster John Hawkesby is entitled to $5.259 million in compensation. The amount represents the unpaid balance of Hawkesby's six year contract in which the broadcaster was to be paid over $750,000 a year.. Television New Zealand are currently appealing the decision.
NRL DROWNING: There is grief today in Australia at the death of a well known Australian NRL manager who died in Auckland harbour early this morning. Michael Moore the NRL Melbourne Storm teams manager died jumping into the sea after drinking at a waterfront bar near the America’s Cup village. Police believe the man hit his head when diving off the pier and believe his death could have been avoided.
HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION Police say they are beginning a homicide investigation after the body of a Christchurch woman was found in a Canterbury riverbed. The woman was believed to have died around midnight on Saturday. Police are continuing their investigations which include checking video
AMERICA’S CUP: America’s Cup village organizers and police are confident they will be able to cope with the masses of visitors set to arrive in the city at the onset of the finals of the America’s Cup.
ITALIAN INVITE: The Government has invited the Italian Prime Minster to come to the cup after Prada’s 5-4 victory over AmericaOne on Sunday.
CREWE MURDERS: Police are examining new information, which could reveal a new suspect in the Crewe Murders. Arthur Allan Thomas served 9 years in jail after being convicted in 1970 of the murders of Jeanette and Harvey Crewe before a Court of Appeal Judge gave him an historic pardon. Friends of Thomas revealed the information to Police Minister George Hawkins who passed it to police.
CHILD KILLINGS: A judge has ruled that a Wanganui woman who killed her two children is not guilty for reasons of insanity. Police found the children’s bodies in the boot of the woman’s car after she had driven it off the road near where she lived. The woman had stabbed the children with scissors and had cut their throats. The woman said a male voice began talk to her during pregnancy and drove her to the killings.
AFGHAN HIJACK: A hi-Jacked Afghan Boeing 727 airplane is now in Stanstead airport after being taken from the Middle East and flown to Moscow. Ten passengers were freed at that time. Police are now negotiating with the hijackers to release passengers.
