Peter Doone (Extended Coverage) - Cannabis Protest - God's Army - Chechnya - Americas Cup - PMT Over GST In Oz
PETER DOONE (EXTENDED COVERAGE): The embattled Police Commissioner who insists he did nothing wrong has quit his job.
Jane Young Live: It all boiled down to a lack of judgement says the PM. Intense negotiations behind the scene have produced a controversial compromise.
Report: The first political scalp of the new millennium. Commissioner Doone has been offered a new job in the PMs department working on getting down the Maori offending rate. Report from deputy commissioner Rob Robinson notes different versions of events on the night in question. Constable says he did not feel intimidated. Commissioner says he got out of the car out of instinct. PM says the issue was whether Doone should work out a period of notice - she says it is not a golden handshake. Police Association are pleased to be able to move on. Rob Robinson says the whole affair has been unfortunate and difficult for the police.
Jane Young Live: The government has been able to do this deal. If they were in opposition there would be howls of derision around this place. As Commissioner he was interested in Maori crime but the trouble is that while there are apparently letters of support from Maori in this area they won't tell us who they are from.
CANNABIS PROTEST: Cannabis given away at Wellington District Court by a cannabis campaigner. Teenagers at the court are pleased. Police less so. Police say they have recovered most of the given away cannabis. The man has been charged with possession. He will be back at court tomorrow for stage 2 of his protest.
GOD'S ARMY: Nine members of the gang that held a hospital hostage killed as Thai commandos storm the hospital. A gun battle lasted an hour. No hostages were killed. The guerillas were caught on video by a camera crew allowed in earlier. Thai government has promised to stop shelling the guerillas base.
CHECHNYA: Russian military has put the true casualty number at 1000 far higher than previously admitted by politicians. New footage exclusive to ITN of Chechen attacks against the Russian army shows Russian prisoners begging for their lives. Chechen video contains graphic evidence that Russian's are understating the casualty numbers.
AMERICAS CUP: After months of anticipation stormy seas delay the finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup. The boats are too fragile to sail in high winds. Coastguard pleased with the cancellation. Some fans however are disappointed.
PMT OVER GST: Australian women are demanding tampons should be exempt from the new GST. Condoms are exempt - but tampons are not a health product they are defined as a hygiene product. The PM is feeling the tension and says that exemptions should not be allowed as they will undermine the new tax.
