Photo Essay - The Wellington Waterfront Plans

Published: Wed 22 Dec 1999 03:33 PM
The Wellington City Council is set to decide on the future of Wellington’s Waterfront. Mayor Mark Blumsky is urging Wellingtonians to familiarise themselves with the proposals so, at his invitation, Scoop went to Council and photographed the Council’s scale model of the proposals involved in Variation 17 of the District Plan.
Though most Wellingtonians will have no idea that development of the waterfront is even on the cards, the scale of building is likely to shock many. Most people will also be unaware that public submissions are also being called for. They close in February 2000.
Have a look at the waterfront plans and ask if this is what you want for Wellington. Note - The Height Is The Thing To Watch.
The Wellington Waterfornt – set for massive development.
View from marina along Overseas Terminal towards Chaffers Park and New World – both of which are largely obscured by a number of new buildings.

Sea-side view of Queens Wharf buildings.
Angle One – View from Chaffers Park towards sea – a view now largely blocked by new high-rise buildings.
Angle Two – View from Chaffers Park towards sea – shows more buildings to left.
Angle Three – From New World area towards Te Papa – Major apartment style buildings – note scale and height alongside Te Papa – blocking view of Te Papa from Chaffers Park. Also note 40 meter high tower on other side of Te papa where Circa Theatre now stands.
Closer view of high rise building on Circa site – and Te Papa’s doorstep – and equally high tower directly across road on sea side.
