Ocean meet opens in Suva
The International Ocean Institute's 27th annual Pacem in Maribus conference opened in Suva today.
The week-long event is being hosted at the University of the South Pacific.
Pacem in Maribus means Peace in the Ocean
Delegates from more than 20 countries, as well as regional and international organisations are taking part in the conference.
This is a forum where experts can examine threats to the world's oceans, explore the potential ocean resources to sustain humankind, and make connections between disparate marine issues.
Fiji was the first country to sign and ratify the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea. But it is being criticised for failing to fully implement its conditions.
The meet will attempt to bring unity among the attending nations on sustaining the survival of the oceans.
