- "The Eagle Of Liberty Spreads Its Proud Wings Over The People Of East Timor". UN Special Representative Jamsheed Marker has declared yesterday's independence referendum in East Timor an outstanding success. Speaking to a press conference following the poll yesterday Mr Marker said: "Whatever the outcome, today the eagle of liberty has spread its proud wings over the people of East Timor, and nothing by Gods grace will chase it away." Around 90% of registered voters turned out to vote yesterday on what was, in the main, a poll untouched by the violence that has plagued the former Portuguese colony over the past two and a half decades.

CIA Poisoned Norman Kirk - Labour President
- Labour Party President Bob Harvey believes that the CIA was involved in the death of former Prime Minister Norman Kirk - possibly poisoning him on an overseas trip. The Dominion reports today that Harvey wants the CIA files on Norman Kirk opened, on the 25th anniversary of his death. The paper quotes him as saying: "I think that Shipley - and I'm serious about this - should ask Clinton when he turns up at APEC, 'did the [CIA] have a role to play in the removal of… the Kirk administration'." Harvey said the CIA was involved in removing Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam from office in the 1970s and it was possible that Kirk "may have paid the supreme price" for taking on the might of the US during the Cold War. ACT say the allegation is ridiculous and is designed to take the gloss off APEC. See… Labour Whipping Up Anti-US Feeling Before APEC [1] in the Parliament wire.
