Remuera Minister Supports Same-Sex Commitment

Published: Wed 25 Aug 1999 02:41 PM
In contrast to the conservative Christian views of Graham Capill, Presbyterian Minister David S. Clark has welcomed talk of same-sex marriages.
“We are created in God’s image as human beings, both gay and straight. I get angry when I hear judgmental talk claiming to represent a Christian viewpoint” he said.
Members of the Community of Saint Luke where Rev. Clark works expressed dismay at the Christian Heritage party leader’s recent comments. The Community of Saint Luke in Remuera is well known for its stance on justice issues.
“It is important that people realise that there are Christian communities and Churches committed to being open and inclusive. Jesus was condemned by loud religious voices for welcoming all people. If we are condemned for accepting Gay and lesbian people on equal terms, then so be it” Rev. Clark said.
“It is true that many Christians see the Bible as being anti-homosexual. It must be remembered that through history people have used the Bible to justify slavery and to ban women from speaking in Church. We live today in more enlightened times.”
When people ask me about what the Bible says on Homosexuality, I enjoy quoting Lynne Lavner - “The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals. That doesn’t mean God doesn’t love heterosexuals. It’s just that they need more supervision”.
