Confession time. I heard Microsoft New Zealand Paul Muckleston say Windows Phone’s market share hit 15 percent in July at a TechEd dinner function last week.
The number is in my notebook along with comments about its relatively fast growth. I didn’t write anything because when I woke the next morning I suspected I misheard or misinterpreted the number. It was an excellent dinner.
Yesterday Fairfax reporter Chris Gardner wrote a story with the same numbers. The 15 percent share in July might be an outlier, Muckleston says for the year until the end of June, sales were about 4.5 percent.
If the numbers are not a one-off, that would make New Zealand one of Windows Phone’s best markets. The smartphone OS is popular in much of Europe and in some markets around the world, but it is comparatively nowhere in Microsoft’s home country, the US.
And while I’m in the confessional box, I should tell you my main smartphone is a Windows Phone, the Nokia Lumia 920. I got one of the phones to review, often they go back, but this was one I didn’t want to say goodbye to.
For me it’s the only serious alternative to an iPhone. You can read more about my views on the phone at my personal site.
