Air NZ’s Boeing 787-9 delivery delayed after machinists strike
Dec. 24 – Air New Zealand, whose shares have tumbled 55% this year, is in discussions about compensation with Boeing
Co. over delays to delivery of its 787-9 Dreamliners after a machinists strike and production tweaks.
The New Zealand carrier was to have received its first deliveries in early 2010 but in April the timing was delayed
until 2012 and has since been pushed back to the first quarter of 2013.
First deliveries from a separate order of four Boeing 777-300ER aircraft is on schedule, the airline said.
Earlier this month, Boeing announced first deliveries of Dreamliners would start in the first quarter of 2010 because
of 58-day labour disruption and requirements to fit a type of fastener in early production planes.
Boeing has said the Dreamliner will be the most fuel-efficient commercial aircraft in use, with fuel consumption 20%
lower than for rival mid-sized planes.
Shares of Air New Zealand rose 1.2% to 86 cents today. Boeing fell 2.4% to US$40.15 on the Dow yesterday and has
declined 30% in the past three months.
