Jeff Koons Now Showing: Mighty Mighty Wed 3, Thu 4, Sat 6 September, 7.30pm, $15
If the thought of attending a Roger Hall play leaves a theatregoer cold then perhaps a little non-narrative theatre could be just the thing.
The recent production at Bats Theatre of Jeff Koons by the Almost A Bird Collective is about as far from a Roger Hall play as a Wellington theatre afficiacanado could get. For one thing it is most definitely not middle aged. Jeff Koons is aimed at the uber hip theatre goer that may sneak into the odd Film Archive opening for a spot of free vino.
In saying that if you are looking for a plot then the upcoming performances of Jeff Koons should be avoided. Handily enough the next set of shows are evedently on at Mighty ighty whuich is the perfect setting for this slightly pretentious but engaging little hour or so long distraction.
None of the actors seem to play a character as such more the action consists of a series of characters trying to create a 'vibe' maaan – in this case the sidelines of the New York artworld in the late 80s. Sadly though there are no Patrick Bateman type characters listening to Huiey Lewis and the News. It's all Blondie and Laurie Anderson for this crew. For the most part the stage and walls are bathed in a chirpy yellow howver the weird zoned out Laurie Anderson scene does take a trip into mood lighting territory.

If an evening at the or Mighty Mighty sounds like a good night out then head down to Jeff Koons following the non-narrative play the theatre punter can pretty much relive the theatrical experience for real with a few cocktails.
Note: Special plaudits for the wardrobe department particularly whoever thought up the military jacket mid length shorts combo teamed with a red Jim Hopkins bow tie.
