The 95bFM Tuesday Wire Hosted By Kim Choe
2nd September 2008
12:00 bNews, Weather and Surf with Callum
12:20 Ngai Tahu and the ETS
Ngai Tahu lodged a Waitangi Tribunal claim last night, within hours of the deadline for historical claims. The iwi claims that the Crown continues to threaten the integrity of its 1998 settlement, and says one of the major threats to this is the proposed Emissions Trading Scheme – which could become law this week or next. Ngai Tahu Chairman Mark Solomon will talk about the threats as the iwi sees them, and what redress they would like to see from the government.
12:40 The Price of Wine, part I
There are some rumblings coming from Marlborough, where wine growers are calling for more government support for their immigrant workers. The Recognised Seasonal Employment (RSE) work policy was introduced last year to facilitate the entry of temporary workers from overseas. But vineyards say the scheme has increased their costs, and want New Zealand and overseas governments to pitch in. Whose responsibility is it to pay for the people who are vital to our biggest wine producing area? We speak with Wine Marlborough director Dominic Pechennino.
1:00 The Price of Wine, part II
Council of Trade Unions President Helen Kelly will respond to Dominic Pechennino. The CTU thinks it's a bit rich for wine growers to be asking for more money, when they are allegedly not meeting their obligations as employers – by not providing adequate housing, charging exorbitant rents, and 'generally carrying out very poor practices'
1:20 Ship Songs
One man's discovery of how his parents met was the inspiration for Ship Songs, a collection of maritime tales spanning several centuries. That man is actor Ian Hughes, who will be in the studio to talk about the unique play, and its collaboration with Don McGlashan.
1:40 The Green Desk
After the deluge - how has the green desk garden withstood the 40 days and nights of flooding? What are we going to do now the rain has (hopefully) stopped? We'll venture back outside with Green Desk gardener Paul Thompson and see how life is at bFM Acres.
Aucklanders can tune in at 95 on the FM dial.
