The scene outside San Francisco City Hall about an hour into the wedding-fest for same-sex couples. California began
issuing marriage licenses at 5:01pm, following a recent California Supreme Court ruling that to limit marriage to a man
and a woman was unconstitutional.

As each couple exited City Hall the crowd on the narrow pavement outside burst into cheers and applause, though not all
in the throng were of the same opinion.

on both sides of the street—and the issue—under control.
