The Prime Minister kicked off her regular post cabinet press conference by expressing shock at the attempt on the life of the President of East Timor Jose Ramos Horta and appealing for calm.
"We are deeply distressed at what has happened today. We are thankful that he is alive and that he is being evacuated to Australia for surgery. We hope that the outcome of that will be successful. The attempt on his life does underline how fragile the security system is in East Timor. We would certainly urge people in East Timor, this time, to remain calm and not to descend into the kind of terrible trouble and carnage which has characterised the country in recent times," said the NZ Prime Minister.
After delivering a message on behalf of the NZ government concerning events in East Timor the Prime Minister ran through what had happened at cabinet and promised the year ahead, despite being an election year, would be full of policy.
