State-owned electricity provider Transpower recently announced that it has closed a section of the Cook Strait cables. They commissioned a report, which has found that the system is at risk of being unable to meet electricity demand in winter. So could Auckland be headed for another series of blackouts? Kim talks to Transpower Chief Executive Dr Patrick Strange.

An article in the New Zealand Herald yesterday claimed that foster parents are quitting because of the repeal of Section 59 of the Crimes Act. Alyssa Carberry, Chairperson of the South Auckland Caregivers Association, has misgivings about these claims, even though she was quoted in the article herself.

Sustainable Simon talks to Frances Martin, who's been involved in the occupation of Happy Valley on the west coast of the South Island, where state-owned enterprise Solid Energy has consent to undertake opencast coal mining. The occupation has been going for two years now making it the "longest standing occupation in New Zealand's History."
