PakistanEmergency- Expectations for the Future
By Tanveer Jafri
Despite the political opposition & international criticism, the emergency in Pakistan is going on. Along with it, the common life is normal. Markets, shops, schools, colleges, hospitals & government offices are all working in routine & doing their duties as usual. In spite of it, the detention & arrests of the persons opposing President Parvez Musharraf & the emergency imposed on November 3, is continuing. The former Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary is under detention. Begum Benazir Bhutto was also put under detention. But the next day, viewing supposed opposition, her detention was removed. The only minority caste judge Justice Bhagwan Das had to celebrate his pious religious festival of the year, Deepawali in loneliness His only fault was that he refused to take oath under this temporary constitutional order. This temporary constitutional order was ordered by the President General Parvez Musharraf, just after dissolving the Pak constitution. Besides this, the famous human right activist Asma Jahangir & many other human activists, many leaders of political parties, many heads of non-government organizations & workers, who raised voice against emergency have been either sent to jail or placed under detention.
But in spite of normal running life there, the people of Pakistan are pained & angry because of the ban on the private media network. Millions of people are not able to watch their favourite local TV channels. As a result of it, the sale of dish antenna in Pakistan is touching the skies. Last days, three journalists from London have been ordered to leave Pakistan. They have been accused of criticizing the working & the administration of General Musharraf in their reporting. While declaring emergency, President General Parvez Musharraf has told that the terrorism is at its highest level in Pakistan & it has become a danger for Pakistan. Besides this, another main reason for declaring emergency has been told the interference of judiciary in administration.
The above circumstance gave relief to the President General Parvez Musharraf or not, is uncertain. It will become clear after the end of emergency. But according to the Attorney General of Pakistan Malik Qayyum, Musharraf may end emergency within a month. At the time of declaring emergency in Pakistan, the government has told his policy that the emergency will continue till the conditions in Pakistan don't improve. But according to Attorney General Qayyum, there is improvement in the conditions & the government may declare to end the emergency within a month.
Last days, American President George Bush has also tried to advise Musharraf, on a telephonic discussion of 20 minutes to come out of his military uniform and to hold elections up to January 8 as it was pre-planned. The pressure from George Bush & other international & local critics has shown its effect & Musharraf has declared to hold elections before January 9, 2008. If we accept the views of Musharraf, it seems that he is looking for a date, convenient to hold elections of National Assembly along with four Provincial Assemblies.
Now the question arises, what does the promise of Musharraf to hold election in Pakistan before January 9 indicate about the possibilities of continuing emergency? There is surely a decrease in the terrorism activities in Pakistan after the declaration of emergency. At the same time there is no news of any special operation against the terrorists by the Pak soldiers or police, which can be named as an action during emergency. How should this peaceful event be viewed? Is it so that any big action against the terrorists may involve Musharraf in a danger? Secondly it seems that the terrorists, too, are afraid of emergency & they have decided to decrease their terrorist actions. But there is also different news that in the border areas of Pak-Afghanistan, the Pakistan army & police is planning for a big action.
It is known that, the Taliban terrorists have full control over the border tribal territories, Swat valley & Waziristan area, even they have taken many army & police stations under their control. This is the area, form where there is the news of surrendering of Pakistan army in hundreds to the Taliban terrorists. In 2001, America & its ally countries have made an operation along with local tribal leader's organization Northern Alliance against Talibans in Afghanistan. As a result of this operation, it seemed that the ousted Talibanies, who are against humanity, have lost their power. But it didn't happen. There is news of their reorganization for the last three years. If they are pushed from Afghanistan, they get an easy shelter in the border areas of Pakistan. This tribal area has been named a heaven for the terrorists. Slowly they started their entry in the interior of Pakistan. At last the conditions reached the point that there was a misfortunate event of Red Mosque operation. Here it is also justified to tell that these Talibanis have planned not only to rule over Afghanistan but rule of Pakistan is one of their planned priorities. Often, they have been found making such propaganda among the people of Pakistan. Clearly, this deep rooted disease must be cured. This may be by a big operation to be done during emergency by Musharraf or by the elected democratic government of Pakistan, but with the possible honesty & transparency.
Besides this, the second greatest worry is about the nuclear arms in the possession of Pakistan. America, India & even the present administration of Pakistan is worried about, the day by day, increasing courage & power of the fundamentalists & the terrorists. It is feared that this may not enable them to control the nuclear armaments present in Pakistan. Last days the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Begum Benazir Bhutto has also expressed her anxiety over it. She said that whatever may be, but these very sensitive arms should not at any cost, go in the wrong hands.
Viewing the above circumstances, the whole world is looking anxiously towards the emergency in Pakistan, with the aim that what will be the future of this emergency declared is haste by Musharraf? What are the probabilities hidden before the end of the emergency? Whatever it may be, the peace loving people of the world can only pray to God for the bright future of Pakistan & their emancipation from the paws of the fundamentalists, conservatives & terrorists. Beati Pacifici.
