Justice in George Bush's Veto?
By Tanveer Jafri
On the issue of the return of American soldiers from Iraq, the American President George W. Bush has to use his Veto power on it, because it was feared that the democrat parliamentarians may win in the American Congress on this issue. Keeping in view the constant opposition of the American public for the last 4 years, the stern attitude of the democrat parliamentarians & one by one return of the American allies from Iraq war, it was thought that the American Congress might fix any date for the return of it soldiers from Iraq. But President Bush, by making use of his privilege, Veto power, has finished all the expectations of return of the American soldiers from Iraq in near future.
Undoubtedly, the conditions have worsened in Iraq. Since the death of Saddam Husain, it has changed from bad to worse. It is the moral duty of America to control it. It is widely clear in the world that the responsibility for increase of anarchy, distrust, communalism & regionalism lays on America & nobody else. It is not so that George Bush doesn't understand the problems of the American soldiers in Iraq. It is also clear that he understands the worldwide opposition of public of being America an invader in Iraq. He very well understands that the American attack on Iraq was a hasty step. He has once accepted this mistake. But in spite of all this, the Veto used by Bush on the issue of the return of the American army from Iran seems to be a secret & far reaching step.
Probably, the next in line, the democrat candidate for the President ship of America, Hillary Randhom Clinton considers the American war with Iraq as the darkest chapter of the American History. Clinton says that the American-Iraq war will be remembered as a blot in the American History. Not only this, the first probable woman President of America calls the Iraq issue as the political be wilderness of George Bush. She says that before this, no American President has taken risk of putting so many lives of the American soldiers in danger. It is estimated that since the interference of American soldiers in Iraq, Lakhs of Iraqi citizens have been killed. About 3500 American soldiers have lost their lies by now. In the bill of the American Congress, which has been vetoed by George Bush, there was a proposal for the first batch of the American fighters to leave Iraq within the six months. But George Bush vetoed it by saying that it creates confusion & we should not thrust it on our soldiers. Bush is of the view that enemy must not know when we plan to return.
On the other hand, the American soldiers are anxiously waiting for the day of getting orders to leave Iraq. During this period they are passing through great mental tension & as a result of it there is being seen a strange change in their personal behaviour. This increasing tension among the American soldiers is becoming the main reason of ill treatment & torture being done to the Iraqi citizens by the American soldiers. Last year, in the months of August & October, American Defence Department Pentagon got a survey done among the marine soldiers. This survey was mainly based on the torture & misbehaviour towards the Iraqi citizen by the marine soldiers. A view can be brought out by the facts revealed by the survey that the presence of the American soldiers in Iraq is not only bad for the Iraqi citizens, it is also putting the American soldiers in mental agony. This survey showed the facts that there were cases of misbehaviour done to the Iraqi citizens by the American soldiers. The revealed facts also showed that during the behaviour of the American soldiers, the Iraqi citizens were beaten & their property was damaged. Whereas there was no need of doing so. This survey also revealed that there were visible symptoms of tension, worry & mental pain among the American soldiers. And these symptoms become the main reasons of misbehaviour from the American soldiers to the Iraqi citizens. During the war, if an American soldier gets hurt killed, then the behaviour of that military group becomes worse & horrible. After this survey done by the Pentagon, it was recommended that the time of deployment of the American soldiers in Iraq should be decreased. The reason for it was told that a soldier, who is deployed in Iraq for more than six months, the mental problems in those soldiers increase.
Although the above survey was done before the hanging of Saddam Husain yet the problems before the American soldiers were enough at that time. But during the violence & anarchy that prevailed after the hanging of Saddam, the present condition clearly shows that there is increase in the communal violence in Iraq. There is also sufficient increase in the attack on the American soldiers. In the attacks on the American soldiers in the last few days, it is revealed that the active extremists in Iraq always try to find a situation to attack the American soldiers in groups. Many a time, these extremists have succeeded in their aims. These, conditions have spread fear & anxiety among the American soldiers deployed in Iraq.
During the present prevalent sensitive & difficult conditions, all the American citizens, allies of America & people of the world are in favour of the fact that American soldiers should leave Iraq at the earliest. At this present juncture, the Veto of George Bush against the bill by the American Congress creates again an atmosphere of doubt & uncertainty before the world. The coming hard time can only tell the path of the political stunt played on Iraq issue by George Bush. How far step taken by George Bush will do any good to the American soldiers & Iraqi citizens?
