Dear Colleagues,
Supermodels for Oaxaca (APMO, in its Spanish initials) celebrated its first victory yesterday as the embattled Oaxaca Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz was dealt yet another blow to his attempts to reassert his control in the state.
Only three weeks after the models announced a series of protests in New York targeted at Miss Universe owners NBC and Donald Trump, the pageant cancelled its plans to hold the regional costume competition in the ancient indigenous site of Monte Alban, Oaxaca, slated for May 2007.
In the organization's second communiqué, published on Narco News, Connor announces that the Supermodels group will now escalate its protest, targeting Mexican consulates in New York City and elsewhere with a new demand: "Federal Police Out of Oaxaca!"
Connor writes:
"The true credit for this victory goes to the heroic peoples of Oaxaca and their Popular Assembly (known as APPO, in its Spanish initials), which has continued to demand the removal of the fraudulent and illegitimate dictatorship of governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz.
"The first stage of the project thus completed, in solidarity with the workers of Oaxaca, the models of the APMO announce an escalation of our protest: we will move to the second stage of our organizing efforts, and will continue preparations for red carpet pickets in New York and elsewhere. For these actions, the APMO will target Mexican consulates in the United States and all over the world in solidarity with the demands of the APPO for the end of the illegitimate dictatorship of Ulises Ruiz Ortiz. We will continue our actions, as an international models movement, until the Mexican government removes the Federal Preventative Police from Oaxaca and ceases to recognize and prop-up the Ruiz dictatorship."
APMO's upcoming auditions for its "red carpet picket lines" remain scheduled for April 18 in New York City. The deadline for applications is Sunday night March 31. For more information, read the full communiqué on Narco News:
