Foreign Affairs: Security Council Talks Sanctions Over Korea Crisis
- United Nations Security Council members last night continued discussions over what action to take against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) after its reported nuclear test, with the issue of possible sanctions and their enforcement among the key topics. The five: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and United States have the power to veto any resolution. - Three young Auckland women jailed for a crime they did not commit have accepted compensation ranging between $162,000 and $176,000 each, Justice Minister Mark Burton said today. - The Security Council today formally chose Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon of the Republic of Korea as its nominee to be the next Secretary-General of the United Nations for a five-year term when incumbent Kofi Annan steps down on 31 December. The recommendation, made in a resolution adopted in a private meeting by acclamation, now goes to the 192-member General Assembly for formal approval. See...
