By Phil Taylor -- Professor Sir Ian Hugh Kawharu. Paramount Chief of Ngati Whatua, Ngati Whatua o Orakei Trust Board Chairman, Auckland’s Kaumatua (1927-2006). IN the intense and secluded Treaty of Waitangi negotiations between Auckland’s tangata whenua people and the Crown, one Maori leader quietly gave away a slice of his own land.
It was his own business, done without a fuss and summed up the man. He was prepared to give as well as take, though when relating it to the life work of Sir Hugh Kawharu, a more fitting description ‘to acquire’ would be to make just claims for what was rightfully theirs.
