A Hindrance in World Peace- Central Asia Conflict
By Tanveer Jafri
The centuries old Arab-Palestine conflict in Central Asia has taken a dangerous turn. It is proved by the fact that on last July 2 Morning, the Palestine Prime Minister Office of elected Hamas government was badly damaged by the helicopter missile attack of Israel armies. Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh had a narrow escape as he wasn’t present in his office. This dangerous situation is not visible, even when the two armies are fighting with one another in a declared war. Sometime before that death of Palestine leader, the President of Palestine liberation organization (PLO), Yasar Arafat, this Jew army while taking action against the Palestine infiltrators had surrounded their main office, with the help of armored tanks & helicopters. At this time Arafat was present in his office. This sorrowful incident could be averted only with the help of international interference. The conflict which is continuing for the claim of ownership of land which is situated in an eastern coastal region, between the Equatorial Sea & Jordan sea has became the oldest & the most dangerous conflict in the world. Sometimes because of interference of United Nations Organization & sometimes because of American interference, many high level summits have been organized to finish this conflict & establish peace between Israel (Jews) & Palestine (Arab) leaders. All such peace talks give us a temporary thought that this historic bloody conflict will soon end. But in spite of all this, there are factors that are disturbing the peace efforts & giving air to this bloody conflict.
As far as the claim for ownership of this piece of land, situated in Central Asia, between Israel & Palestine is concerned, there are no documents that give clear knowledge about the ancient Israel. Only on the basis of the initial books of the Bible & on the basis of ancient historical literature, a conclusion regarding it can be reached. The historical documents of ancient times necessarily reveal that many battles were fought on the area of present Israel & Palestine administration & this controversial area was lost & won many a time. According to the facts included in the holy Bible, a Christian scripture, up to 250 B.C., on the east of coastal region of Equatorial Ocean the Israel men had started winning the Kanan area & began to settle themselves there. In 1960-62 B.C., a king Solomon ruled over this region. During this period, a place for the prayers was constructed in Jerusalem. Just after the reign of King Solomon, his empire was divided in two parts. In 586 B.C., Babylon attacked the Southern empire Juda & won. The prayer place constructed by Solomon was broken & the Jews were made to leave that place. After seventy years of this incident, the Jews again started to settle in this area. Slowly they rehabilitated Jerusalem & began to reconstruct their places of prayers.
After having the above facts from the Bible, the facts from historical periods tell that in 333 B.C., Emperor Alexander won this region & this area became a Greek colony ruled by the Alexander the great. In 165 B.C., after a revolt in Judia, an independent Jew state was organized which is understood to be last kingdom of the ancient time. In 63 B.C., this Jew State, Judia joined the Palestine kingdom of the Roman Empire. After this historical incident in 70 A.D., there was a revolt against Roman Empire, but the then Roman King Titius crushed this revolt. Titius broke the other places of the prayer. It is said that after this incident, there started this history of strewing of the Jews. During 118-138 A.D., Roman king Hadrian in the initial period of his rule, allowed the Jews to go back to Jerusalem but in 133 A.D., during the second revolt of the Jews, Jerusalem was completely destroyed. Not only this, at that time, the inhabitants of Jerusalem were sold as slaves. In 638 A.D., the Mohammedans of Arab ended the rule of Bezentine. This Bezentine kingdom came into existence in the East, after the Roman Empire. Prophet Omar who got the recognition as the second khaleefa of the Sunni Muslims, got a Mosque built at that place, where today there is a famous & historical Mosque known as Aksa. Since that time to the twentieth century, when Ottoman kingdom came to an end, this area was mostly ruled by the Mohammedans.
Although the conflict had started for the claim of ownership of this area of Central Asia yet during this period, a Jew journalist & writer, Theodore Harlaz, who lived in Vienna, wrote a book, “The Jewish State” in which he imagined an independent state for the Jews. This thinking for writing of this book was based on the treatment by Europe that opposed the Jews. In 1897, the first Jew congress (Zoyanist Congress) was called in Baizal of Switzerland to discuss about this book published in 1896. Some declarations named Baizal Programme were made in this congress. According to these it was decided to construct houses for Jews & was decided to protest this process under the law. To bring this programme in action the world Jewish (Zoyanist) Organization was organized. Some Jews, mostly those have come from Eastern Europe began to reach this place before 1897. By 1903, 2500 Jews had arrived in this region. In this region of Ottoman Empire, the Jews began to live along with about 5 lakhs Arabs. During the First World War, there was the rule of Ottoman Empire of Turkey in this area. But in 1917, the Arabs with the help of the British, finished the Ottoman Empire & separated this area from the control of Turkey. After that in 1918, after the end of world war, Britain took this area under its control. On April 25, 1920, League of Nations recognized British rule over this area. During this period of great administrative changes & conflicts, the British officials did some important promises with the Arab leaders in Egypt. In 1916, British Deputy Commissioner Sir Henry Mc Mohan promised the Arab leaders that after the world war, all the states that came under the old Ottoman state will be declared independent. But at the same time, during this period, Britain & France too did an agreement in which it was decided that they will divide these areas between themselves. Similarly, Britain Foreign Minister Arthur Wellfore declared in 1917 that Britain will work for the rehabilitation of the Jews in Palestine. A senior Jew leader Lord Rats Child was promised so, in a letter written by welfare.
A cause of increasing resentment among the Arabs against the Jews was that because of the Jew Declarations issued between 1920-1930 lacs of the Jews entered that Palestine area that was under the control of the British. According to a British Census, in 1922, the population of Jews in Palestine increased from 7.5 lacs by 11%. In the next 15 years, more than three lacs Jews reached this region. The constant increasing population of the Jews increased the Arab-Jews conflict. In this bloody conflict, in 1929 the Palestinian Arabs killed 133 Jews where as 110 Palestinian Arabs were killed by the police. Britain setup a Royal Commission in July 1937. This commission was presided by former foreign secretary Lord Peel who was in charge of Indian affairs in Britain. This commission recommended dividing this controversial region of Central Asia in two parts. One the Jew region & the other the Arab region, but Palestinian & Arab representatives rejected this recommendation of Lord Peel. They demanded the immediate check on the great influx of the Jews. It was also one of the demands of the Arabs that instead of dividing the country, the Jews should be considered as a minority & there should be measure to protect the rights of the minorities. The Palestinian Arabs continued their struggle till 1938 against the division of the country as recommended by Peel, which was strongly crushed by the Britain. The Britain that had been ruling over Palestine since 1920 handed over the responsibility of solving this controversy in 1947 to the United Nations. Now the Arabs began to feel that their rights are being breached. They thought it a plot to internationalize this controversy as it was sent to the United Nations. The result- all the controversial area was gripped in violence & the Arabs & the Jews were at dagger’s drawn.
