African prose writer and playwright Nuruddin Farah was exiled from his native Somalia in 1976 as a result of his
provocative writing. His work centres on the stories of Somalia and its people through dictatorship, liberation and
ongoing chaos.
Farah is in New Zealand for the NZ Post Writers and Readers week. He spoke to Scoop about his history, the need for
women's rights in family structure, the relationship between narrative and politics and his use of English as a language
for writing.
