Me, Too! Me, Too!
I've just been reading about made-up words over at Public Address, and this being a rainy Friday afternoon on which I have nothing better to do, I want to add a new word to the lexicon my very self.
But be warned. It's only right I should disclose that on the first occasion I heard the word "yuppies" I thought it referred to some kind of amphibious sea creature, as in the sentence: "The boatshed was crawling with yuppies."
My expertise at word-creation is likely in direct proportion to my expertise at word-understanding, but nonetheless, I aim to breathe new life into the game of turning acronyms into words. Here it is: "smaw."
In the US, the sound of this word has a special connotation because there is a food called smores. At the bottom of the column I'll put a link to a website that sells you a kit to use making these "fun-to-make campfire creations, oozing with marshmallows and sweet chocolate, tucked in between crunchy golden graham crackers. Yum!" (Maltmeal wafers are the Kiwi equivalent to grahams.)
Alas, my smaw is probably not a lot of fun around a campfire, or oozing with sweetness. She is a solo middle-aged woman. She may be solo as in single and living alone, or she may be solo as in the only part of the baby-producing duo who is still shouldering responsibility for the welfare of her grown children. Yes, grown children--who can't get a job because the economy is in tatters.
But let's not get gloomy! Have a Happy New Year and throw another smore on the barbie!
