12.20 Howard Gilbert
If you were to pick one sport that was intrinsically Japanese – sumo wrestling would probably be it. Indeed no western styled Japanese movie, comic, cartoon or television series seems to be able to go without at least one sumo-analogy. As History PhD candidate Howard Gilbert argues, however, sumo is far bigger than that. So big in fact that amateur sumo wrestling is a sport in its own right. At 12.20 Howard will join me dispel some sumo sized myths.
12.45 Not everyone likes conventions – all that tea, instant coffee and suspect looking soggy club sandwiches. There is a convention on this weekend however that looks to be running a slightly different agenda. Called Cultural Futures it is being held at Hoani Waititi Marae and aims to develop an international awareness for locally produced art. Two of those involved in the symposium, Danny and Nova are coming in to tell us why at 12.45.
1pm When I played a batrider song a couple of weeks ago someone rang me up and said how sad it was that the band has split up post their Melbourne jaunt. Now I hate to show the callers up but he was very wrong on that one – batrider and very still much alive and kicking and to prove it Toby Morris, batrider's bass player, will be calling through from Melbourne around 1 o'clock.
1.30 The last few times I have hosted this show Jeremy Hall has delighted in the fact that I'm really rather technically inept. I'm guessing it's because he gets to do more talking. He will be in as per usually with sound bites galore at 1.30.
In the gaps we will have some music – a batrider track or two no doubt – and perhaps a giveaway or two – but starting us of – lets have some news…
Aucklanders can tune in at 95 on the FM dial. From the desk of Noelle McCarthy News and Editorial Director Radio 95bfm
