Governor-General Wars: The Letter to Leaders
Below is a letter sent by the Cabinet Office to all party leaders after the election, regarding Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright's role in the negotiation to form a Government. The letter was released by the Prime Minister.
National Deputy-Leader Gerry Bownlee yesterday spoke out against Dame Silvia. He said he had "lost respect" for her due to her failure to consult more widely over the Government formation process in such a close election, and for accepting such unconventional Government arrangements.
The Governor General's honour has since been defended by the Prime Minister, and today Winston Peter's launched a vigorous counter-attack on Mr Brownlee for his comments. Mr Peters described Mr Brownlee as 'constitutionally ignorant'.
“It is the height of rudeness and cowardice to personally attack the Governor-General, who is constrained by constitutional convention and therefore unable to defend herself," said Mr Peters.
