- At 3.50pm today the Green Co-Leaders Rod Donald and Jeanette Fitzsimons held a brief photo call with Prime Minister
Helen Clark and Deputy Labour Party Leader Michael Cullen prior to the beginning of coalition and government formation
talks. At her earlier Press Conference Prime Minister Helen Clark said nothing should be read into the order in which
she would be meeting with the five minor party leadership teams. The order was simply a function of when people were
available. See... Images: Greens Meet Labour For Coalition Talks [1]

The Muriwai Lifeguard Service tower was today rescued off the rugged Auckland west coast beach by New Zealand Crane Hire
after surf and wind had eroded the dunes it was built on. The 220 tonne Grove crane, the biggest in New Zealand Crane
Hire’s fleet, swung the tower around over the dunes into the carpark of the Muriwai Lifeguard Service. See... Crane Hire rescues Muriwai Lifeguard tower [1]

Foreign Affairs Combs Bali Hospitals After Bomb Blast
- At least three bombs exploded in Bali at 8.00pm local time on 1 October, at Kuta and Jimbaran. Several deaths and injuries have occurred. At this stage there
are no reports of New Zealand casualties. New Zealand Embassy staff from Jakarta, now in Bali, are continuing to check
hospitals for casualties. New Zealanders concerned about family and friends in Kuta and Jimbaran should try to contact
them directly, in the first instance. Communications, however, remain difficult. See... Hamas members and supporters, was in progress at the packed Jabaliya refugee camp when an explosion shook the place and

U.S. Soldiers Trade Images Of Iraqi Dead For Pornography -
Scoop contributor Richard Ehrlich reports that U.S. troops in Iraq have traded hundreds of images of mutilated corpses in exchange for free online pornography.
The owner of the pornography website justifies the trade citing ideals of freedom of expression. The Pentagon is
investigating. But what does this practice really reveal about what is happening in Iraq? Scoop Editor’s note: content will likely offend. See... Public Address from Russell Brown Is In
- Simon Pound conducted an excellent interview [1] on The Wire with National Party historian Barry Gustafson, regarding the moderate pushback within the party:
NATFORT and all that. Gustafson's view is that the ideas on Maori and immigrants that National took into this year's
election were the work of the "radical right" and that true conservatives would be far more circumspect. See... PUBLIC ADDRESS - Traditional and Pragmatic [2]
Former Confidence And Supply Buddy Gleefully Predicts Labour's Downfall -
My prediction: - given the tightness of the outcome - this was a good election for National to lose. Helen Clark may be
a lot of things but she's no fool. She will do whatever it takes to cobble a third term and secure her place in Labour
history (or should that be Labour herstory?). I think we will have an election within eighteen months and, providing
National doesn't do anything foolish, Don Brash will be crowned Prime Minister. A new chapter in our political history
will then begin. See... The landscape of politics [1]
MMP Files (3): Why The Right Favours FPP Over MMP
- In Part 3 of his MMP Files series, economist and social commentator Keith Rankin explores why National Party supporters prefer FPP. From 1954-1993
National clearly benefited from FPP, forming most governments, including three with less than 40% of the vote. While
National never got a majority of the vote in this period, in 1990 it would have gained 50% of the seats in an MMP
election. See... The MMP Files [3]: Elections Past and Future [1] ALSO:Returning To Parliament Through The Back Door [2] MMP Files (1) - What Would FPP and Other Voting Systems Have Delivered On Sept 17?

Scoop News: Taito Phillip Field Issues Denial Over Allegations
- Investigations into alleged impropriety by Labour Cabinet Minister, Taito Phillip Field, have been widened after fresh allegations surfaced. The claims have
seen Mr Field issue a statement denying wrong. An Onehunga family has come forward claiming Field purchased their home
for $259,000. Phillip Field is reported as having later sold the home for $395,000. Television New Zealand has reported
that an anonymous Auckland man claims Field wrote a letter supporting a work permit for a 46-year-old man who later
painted three of Field's houses. See... Investigations Into Field's Conduct Force Denial [1] ALSO:Statement By Taito Phillip Field Re: Allegations [2] Phillip Field Statement On Ministerial Inquiry [3] Images: Signed Statements Supporting Phillip Field [4]
28,000 Families Get Extra Help From Monday
- Around 28,000 families will be eligible for extra help with child care costs from Monday, Social Development and
Employment Minister Steve Maharey said today. Subsidies for childcare and OSCAR (Out of School Care and Recreation)
providers are set to increase by ten percent from 3 October, as part of the continued roll-out of the Working for
Families package. The increase is on top of a ten percent boost and a widening of eligibility in October last year.

Research Shows Rod Definitely Not Spared In NZ -

Community Work For Brothel Owner Who Hired 14 Year Old Girl Slammed By Advocacy Group -
Yesterday’s decision by the Wellington District Court, to hand out a meagre 300 hours community work to a woman who sold
two girls aged 14 and 17 years of age for sex, was extremely disappointing says one group working to end the sexual
exploitation of children and youth. Judge John Walker sentenced the former Wellington brothel owner to community work on
two charges of entering into an arrangement for commercial sex and two of facilitating commercial sex with two girls
under 18. The Judge also granted the woman name suppression. See... Sentence For Brothel Owner Manifestly Inadequate [1]
Greens Say Carbon Emissions From Marsden B Will Cost NZ
- Independent commissioners yesterday granted initial resource consent, with a number of strict conditions, for Mighty
River Power to re-commission the mothballed power station near Whangarei. But the Green Party says firing up Marsden B
on coal will make it even more difficult to reduce New Zealand's carbon emissions and the $500 million Kyoto deficit
they are projected to cost, Green Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons says. See... Marsden B will make $500m Kyoto deficit harder [1]
Greens Show Sustainable Business-Friendly Face
- The Green Party has welcomed a report published today by the Business Council for Sustainable Development that calls
for a long-term energy strategy for New Zealand. "It is good to see business endorsing the need for governments to plan,
because energy markets cannot respond fast enough to the changes we are facing," Greens Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons
says. See... Greens Welcome Sustainable Business Proposals [1]
