LEAD STORY:
U.S. Ambassador To NZ Considers The Big Nuke Questions
So the question is: what are these differences? Are they inevitable because of different ways of viewing the world, or are they a product of a single split in policy that happened twenty years ago? Can we bring ourselves closer, or will we continue to drift ever further apart? Believe me, I have thought over these questions long and hard over the past four years. And I confess that I do not have the answers. But I do have a suggestion-- We need to talk about it. See... Peters Details His Three Post-Election Options
- "I make this guarantee that whatever decision New Zealand First arrives at post election, it will be made public by
the day the Writs are returned, which is within three weeks from polling day... But I give you this warning – the media
is going to have to be more sophisticated in its understanding of multi-party democracy if it is going to report this
election accurately. Because there will be three large parties after this election and the nature of the government
formed subsequently will be unique to that environment." See... Winston Peters Speech - No Re-Run Of 1996 [1]
Mallard Hints At Student Loan Tweaking
- Kevin List reports that before the Prime Minister took any questions at yesterdays post cabinet press conference,
Education Minister Trevor Mallard, found time to attack Bill English’s latest press statement and hint at impending
changes regarding student loan repayments. The prospect of changes surrounding the student loan scheme was also hinted
at by Mr Mallard. These changes would be aimed at reducing the amount of time it takes to pay back a student loan.

- Kevin List Reports From Parliament: “For Parliament to legislate in this area really raises a number of very
unfortunate precedents. I think that it is important in a democracy that when we try and deal with a problem you don’t
end up compromising your own values in seeking to deal with that problem,” the Prime Minister explained at her regular
Monday post-cabinet press conference. See... this and a complete run down on all aspects of the Black Cap's tour to

Scoop Link: Journalist In Iraq Killed For Damning Expose
- BAGHDAD, Iraq - Yasser Salihee, an Iraqi special correspondent for Knight Ridder, was shot to death in Baghdad last
Friday. The shot appears to have been fired by a U.S. military sniper, though there were Iraqi soldiers in the area who
also may have been shooting at the time. Salihee, 30, had the day off and was driving alone near his home in the western
Baghdad neighborhood of Amariyah when a single bullet pierced his windshield and then his skull. He was shot as his car
neared a joint patrol of American and Iraqi troops who'd stopped to search a building for snipers. American and Iraqi
soldiers are frequently targeted by suicide car bombers. See... Links: Reporter Murdered And The Story He Died For [1]

Hard News & More Is There!

Independence Day
- The barbeques are sizzling, flags are fluttering everywhere, patriotic parades and speeches are the course of the
day. Although large biting fish have deterred swimmers on the East Coast, people have flocked to parks, beaches and
lakes to celebrate the 229th anniversary of America’s independence. But there is something missing this year. It is
largely intangible, more of a feeling or mood in the air, but it is also palpable and very real. It is, in a word, a
sense of withdrawal. See... Paul G. Buchanan: Cracks In The Façade [1] MORE: Kamala Sarup - US Independence Day [2] Martin Lefevre - Martin LeFevre: Vultures at Gleneagles [3]
Norm Dixon Explores The Flaws In The G8 Poverty Deal
- The mass media hype about “a new deal between rich and poor”, in response to the powerful Group of Eight
industrialised countries’ plan to cancel multilateral debts owed by 18 mainly African countries, has led many people to
believe that a new era of international social justice has dawned. The deal is expected to be ratified by G8 leaders in
Scotland on July 6-8. See... G8: How The Rich World Short-Changes Africa [1] MORE: John Roughan - Make Poverty History! [2]
