Brief Observations on the Cease-Fire between Israel and Palestine
By Genevieve Cora Fraser
It doesn't take much "critical thinking" to see the disparities. Israel illegally occupies Palestine and attacks the civilian population at will with tanks, jets, helicopters, guided missiles and well-armed snipers. They bulldoze homes and continue to construct the Wall within Palestine separating neighbor from neighbor. To this day, there are checkpoints and roadblocks everywhere, illegal Israeli settlements, military outposts and a network of Israeli-only roads within Palestine. Since the cease-fire the occupation continues, but its deadly impact is rarely picked up by the Western media. "Relative calm" means no Israelis died.
Recently two Palestinian homes in Jerusalem were bulldozed with $2 million allocated by the government to demolish 26,000 additional homes in Jerusalem. Typical headlines throughout the Arab world read: Israeli Troops Go on Rampage in the West Bank. "A contingent of the Israeli occupation force stormed Tobass city, north of the West Bank for the second time within 24 hours, WAFA News Agency reported." (4/4/05) That's on a good day. On bad days people are shot, wounded or killed. These reports are accompanied by photos.
Israeli settlers continue to cut down Palestinian olive and citrus trees and poison their crops and livestock. On occasion Palestinians have retaliated in the past by blowing themselves up on buses, bridges, in nightclubs - and take innocent Israeli lives with them. But, make no mistake, Palestine does not occupy Israel nor do they carry out the daily acts of humiliation and horror that is part of the daily grind in Palestine. If you want peace, end the occupation, before further Israeli aggression destroys all hope for change.
