NEWSFLASH: Pope John Paul II Believed Close To Death
Reports out of Rome this morning indicate Pope John Paul II may be close to death.
CNN is reporting that the Pope may have received the sacrament of the sick, while the Vatican has publicly stated that the Pope is suffering from a high fever caused by a urinary infection.
A spokeswoman from the NZ Catholic Church speaking from Rome to Radio New Zealand said the fact that the Pope had received the sacrament of the sick did not necessarily mean he was at the point of death.
Lindsay Freer said it was routine in the church for the sacrament of the sick to be administered to anyone who was seriously ill.
This year the Pope did not participate in Holy Week services for the first time.
