Schwarzeneggar's zinger Tuesday night has Democrats questioning their manhood.
New York City--The Democrats were caught with their panties down Tuesday night when California Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneggar launched a blistering attack on the fiscal credentials of the opposition party.
Speaking to what he characterized as Democrats' pessimistic attitude toward the economy, his message was unmistakable.
"Don't be such economic girlie-men."
The crowd erupted in thunderous applause with Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott leaping out of his chair to show his support.
"Hot dog! Did ya hear that?" Lott gushed. "Tax and spend liberals better watch out. There's a new sheriff in town. Go get'em Arnie!"
It was a brilliant political move meant to put the Kerry campaign and the Democrats on the defensive. And it undoubtedly worked.
At that moment, Republicans smelled blood for the first time at this convention with even Kerry's Truth Squad unable to answer the charge effectively.
"We just weren't expecting Arnold Schwarzeneggar to recycle a tired line from a 20-year-old 'Saturday Night Live' skit to win political points," Kerry campaigner Drew Marcello insisted. "Sure he used it in his campaign for Governor ad nauseum, but we assumed even he was sick of hearing it by now. Apparently not."
One thing is for sure, the crowd of delegates responded as if it was the first time they had ever heard the phrase. And indeed, for some attendees it was their first time.
"Girly-men. Haha. I like that," shrieked Geraldine Proza from Summersville, Iowa.
Another delegate speculated that the Governor's extensive scriptwriting experience in Hollywood inspired the phrase.
"How does he think of this stuff? He's a creative genius. He is to original comedy material what the Swift Boat Veterans are to Truth."
Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealand had a very different take on the matter.
"Are we getting royalties for this?" asked Carvey.
"I swear if I had a nickel for every time he's used that line I could buy some crack," Nealand lamented.
