Reflections On The 2nd 911 Anniversary
by MalcontentX
What a strange world is this? - that I should find myself feeling euphoric on this, the second anniversary of the Sept.
11th attacks.
Not to suggest, of course, insensitivity to the pain and loss of that terrible day; on the contrary, I speak here of the
growing chorus of truth-seekers who are finally coming out of the woodwork: providing more sure an indicator of hope
than any other, that such attacks may never happen again. First comes to mind the victim-families, doggedly maintaining
pressure on our elected politicians, that an honest accounting may one day be aired. Then there are those dedicated
souls within the 9/11 investigative "community" -many of whom have helped to organize vigils, meetings; and, on this
day, the simulcast showings of the GNN film, "Aftermath: the Unanswered Questions of 9/11," in cities around the world.
As I make my way to the local theatre, I'm thinking of the day's articles from the (online) mainstream press: the
"Meacher" article out of Britain, the Philly news, and others. (both linked in the postings below).
The facts which some of us have been discussing for two years -calling into question the "official story"- are now
finding their way onto established venues in all their specific, startling detail.
Arriving at the theatre a few minutes before show-time, I'm surprised and pleased to find a long line-up for tickets
-only to be told that the line-up for people who already have tickets stretches around the block in the other direction.
(Any disappointment I might feel, should I not get a ticket, muted by the number of concious seekers surrounding me).
Standing in line, reflecting on the two-year struggle to try and get the word out: how, in the beginning there were
cries for blood, vengeance; anyone who called for calm or asked questions was met by accusations of "traitor,"
"anti-american," "conspiracy-theorist."
Now it is the once-silent citizens themselves who are coming forth to express their need (and right) to know.
I strike up a conversation with a guy in the line. He's clearly unaware of the depth and scope of the questions that
many have been exploring. He's simply interested to know more about the event which has defined a generation. From the
tone of other conversations going on, it's clear that some are well-informed: a cross-section of American life, mostly
young, between the ages of 20-40.
The 5,000 seat auditorium is jam-packed.
Just before the movie begins, the house grows still as a mouse -as we pause for a moment of silence, in memory of those
who died in the attacks.
For the first time, surrounded by a room full of my fellow citizens, I feel a clear confirmation that those 3,000 people
did not die in vain. In their sacrifice, we have been given a reason to ask profound, difficult questions about the
society in which we live. Though the 4,000 Afghani civilians (and even more Iraqis) who died in America's response to
the attacks may know not such televised remembrance; they too, will have an honoured place at the table of history, if
we would but have the courage to ask: why? how? who?
With each new year that passes, I know that the wave of honest, self-reflection will only grow in momentum. From that
seed of despair, shall grow a forest of humanity renewed: from war to peace, from deception to justice, from fear to
authentic celebration.
I can think of no better way of honouring those who can no longer be with us, than to continue asking the question: of
what is this, our country made?
peace,
