The following images were taken at last night’s debate on banking at the Victoria University Memorial Theatre attended by around 300 interested members of the public including a party of seventh form economics students.
The debate was chaired by NZ Democrat and Alliance MP Grant Gillon and featured UK author and Monetary Reform advocate Michael Rowbotham vs Reserve Bank Financial Markets Manager Michael Reddell.
The speakers addressed the question: 'That the private banks should create almost all of New Zealand's money supply' with the Reserve Bank taking the affirmative.
Michael Rowbotham spoke first describing an inherently unstable global banking and trading system that has resulted in poverty and starvation amid plenty.
Michael Reddell countered saying that he would not have chosen the debate topic he was charged with defending, preferring to argue instead that the present system of privately created money by and large did more good than harm.
