Images from the environs of the most photogenic mountain village in the world taken by Norman Mackay , including a picture and tale about a small dog with the heart of a lion.
Ice Dogs - The small Terrier on the ice with my dog Jade, is called " Frankie ". He got himself in a lot of trouble just
after I took the photo of him and Jade on the ice at Lake Middleton. He ran out on the lake to retrieve a stick he
fancied, and in doing so he fell through the ice and could not free himself because of the thickness of the ice on the
lake.. I watched as he struggled desperately to break the ice, and try to either swim back, or manage to get back on the
surface of the ice and walk back to shore. I eventually had to wade out up to my waist to grab him and bring him back.
We were both wet and shivering by the time we reached the shore. Frankie has a heart of a lion, and would try anything.
Taken July 2nd.
Ohau Morning - taken July 2nd as the sun reached my front decking. The temperature was -5C. It has been another
wonderful High Country day with nothing but sunshine ( and cold temperatures ).. My wife Barbara and I love the southern
alps, and chose to live here after a lifetime of travelling around the world. I have a great love of the mountains
having been a climbing instructor ( in Norway ) when I was younger. Lake Ohau is a truly magnificent place to live if
you love the outdoors.
The Road to Heaven - taken about 1.30pm on the 29th June, on the road that leads into the Lake Middleton and Lake Ohau
area from the main road. It shows the Ohau range of mountains.
Winter Supply and Sky - also taken on the 29th June, at about 7.45am in morning and shows the start of the Ben Ohau
mountain range. It was taken from my front garden.
