Scoop Update #1
****\\//****
Dear member of the My Scoop community,
This is the first message in what we expect will be a very occasional series of broadcast emails to you - the community of My Scoop subscribers. It is intended as update on where Scoop is at, where we have been and where we are going.
It is probably appropriate that we acquire a more personal tone in our communications with our readers as we are now two years old. Our birthday was on June 9th (See below for link). Since our tumultuous beginnings we like to think we have now thoroughly established ourselves on the Internet. Well at least in your inboxes anyway!
There are now more than 3000 My Scoop news-by-email subscribers and many of you, we know, receive a fairly large amount on any given day. And so we, the Scoop team, say thank you! Without you reading all this guff it would be kind of pointless.
We also figure you may be interested in a few more Scoop statistics and so the following is a snapshot of where we are at, and who you are.
- On a typical day 5000 people from 37 countries read between 17,000 and 22,000 pages on Scoop.
- In recent months we have been delivering around 500,000 pages and 150,000 emails a month to desktops around the country and the world.
- The typical Scoop subscriber, we think, is at work and the peak reading time each day is between 4pm and 5pm after we send out the daily headline update.
- Finally we are sure you will be delighted to know that according to in depth Scoop research, My Scoop subscribers are on average 30% more innovative, intelligent, informed and free-thinking than people who don’t read Scoop regularly.

Scoop's 15 Minutes Of Fame Coming Up Soon!

If you are wondering - and by now you probably are - what this email is all about, then look no further. It is mainly about skiting. We also want to get to know you, and what you think about Scoop, and more about that later.
But when truth is told this email has been sparked in large part by the fact that next Friday the Scoop team will be assembling in Auckland’s Edge Convention centre for the Computerworld Excellence Awards. We just wanted to share this with you in the hope that it will make you like Scoop even more, and tell your friends about it, and us. In the next edition of the Scoop Update we will relate the story of what happened on the night, with pictures (*fingers crossed*).
To our great surprise Scoop was selected as a finalist in the grand-daddy award of the night, the award for “Overall Excellence in Information Technology”. Sounds rather impressive don’t you think!
And the fact that Scoop has been selected as one of three finalists out of close to 400 entries in the competition is proof positive that we are already excellent! But then hopefully you already think that anyway.

Scoop Honoured For Excellence Award In The Use Of Email

While we are the subject of bouquets. One among the Scoop Community deserves a bouquet more than most. Kath Dewar, internet consultant and 'brain for hire', now is your time to step forward.
Kath has earned her bouquet in a way that should be commended to all other Scoop readers. For saying nice things about Scoop above and beyond the call of duty.
Writing on the Message Media website, Kath says, “My favourite local news email service comes from www.scoop.co.nz. It includes the big stories and lets me subscribe to niche or underground coverage, such as Russell Brown of 95 BFM's Hard News. The free, daily Top Stories service I subscribe to wastes no time, gives me a breathless summary and then lets me click to the gory details if I want more. Headlines such as "Police Steal Cash Crop, Cripple Industry" are hard to go past!”
For more of Kath’s delightful remarks see…

Scoop readers are challenged to do a “Kath Dewar” of their own, and to send it to us at editor@scoop.co.nz, for possible inclusion in future editions of the Scoop Update.

Russell Brown's New Life At RNZ...
****\\//****
Finally in this update we would like to provide a heads up on the activities of Scoop’s favourite columnist, the inimitable Russell Brown. We know you can’t get enough of him, so here is how to get some more. Russell explains in detail his new life in the latest edition of Unlimited magazine, and so it will suffice to say in this arena that he has recently been released from his day job at IDG.Net and is now first and foremost a media commentator with a weekly slot on Sunday Mornings at 9.06am on National Radio with the show Mediawatch. And if you miss it, it is repeated 10pm Sunday evening. For Hard News fans this is a must hear.
