Around 50 protestors have gathered at the Freedom Shop in Upper Cuba Street for the shop’s sixth birthday celebrations and to kick off today’s Cuba St May Day Carnival Against Capitalism.
Groups represented at the meet include students, Maori activists, anarchists, environmentalists, unions and the animal kingdom.
Food is being provided by Food Not Bombs and the Anarchist Teapot including roasted sunflower seeds vegetarian nachos, chocolate cake and salads.
Accompanying the protests is a giant Mike Moore puppet. A protestor who spoke to Scoop believes the protest is also being attended by undercover police officers.
