The E-End To The Cold War
Urban legend? Perhaps. But then again it could also be Gospel truth. Certainly to Sludge it is a story that rings true
enough, but then Sludge has been ruminating on it for a year or two.
That said it is a story that has been confirmed sufficiently frequently now by Sludge’s friends and acquaintances to
warrant further recounting. If only for the purpose of entertainment. To at least encourage the urban legend. So here
goes.
In the meantime keep an open mind. You will need it. This is not the sort of story you will hear everyday.
First of all you need to take yourself back in time to the end of the Cold War. The fall of the Berlin Wall, 1989.
Russia has its most, and perhaps only ever, likeable leader in the Kremlin, Mikhail Gorbachev. Unlike most of his
predecessors Mikhail smiles, he is conscious, he is sober. And he is aged under 80.
Gorbachev’s policy of Glasnost, openness, has been gathering pace for some time. By 1989 things are starting to get
difficult for him and his administration. His reformist plan is reaching the peak of its crescendo.
The USSR is straining at its seams. The Baltic states are itching to go their own way. Poland is already heading off on
a tangent. Meanwhile Gorbachev is beginning to lose the confidence of his security apparatus as events following the
fall of the Berlin Wall clearly show.
But before the tide of Glasnost and peace can be reversed by the uptight and uniformed, there is a breach in the dam in
Berlin. A miracle.
The Berlin Wall suddenly comes down. Everyone on the planet is amazed.
One of the longest, most vicious, and bitter wars on the planet – The Cold War – it seems is now suddenly over.
Seemingly with the ease of a flick of a switch.
How and why this happened has been the subject of innumerable discourses. But none till now as simple as the explanation
you are about to receive.
Looking back now there is plenty of corroborating evidence, much of it ironic, for the strange postulation that follows.
For example much of the destruction of the actual wall itself in Berlin took place in the middle of the night – it seems
with something akin to a dance party atmosphere going on.
But then there is what happened to Gorbachev himself after he finally lost control of the reins of the Russian ship of
state.
You might have expected that a former Russian President would retire to a dacha on the Black Sea and exercise his dogs.
But not Mikhail.
We are now talking the early 1990s, and if the USSR looked a little fractious for Gorbachev in 1989, by 1992 it’s
another country entirely. Gorbachev is not hanging around to find out whether he will get the blame. A peace prize and
speaking circuit beckons.
But first up Gorbachev hops off to visit some friends in the West.
San Francisco to be precise, where he arrives reportedly sporting some flowers in his hair. On arrival he looks up an
old mate from Moscow, a native of sunny California and it seems something of a party guy – Jim Garrison (not the pop
star).
Jim Garrison, who had been in Moscow in the late 1980s, is now running a “spa-bath-for-peace” initiative named Elysium
in which he gets military leaders and diplomatic types to strip down to their under-dacs and sample some shared hot
water together.
Garrison invites Gorbachev to become a “co-chair” of a new initiative he has planned called the “State Of The World
Forum”. This is to be a new NGO allegedly involved with networking progressive business people and organisations for the
purpose of saving the world.
This new organisation then sets up shop inside the Presidio, a former US Naval enclave under the Golden Gate bridge.

What is important to this narrative is just who Jim Garrison really is.
Not a great deal is known about Garrison by Sludge beyond the man’s fondness for spa baths. We also know he is/was a
close friend of Australian born UNSCOM (UN Special Commission On Iraq) chief Richard Butler, who has now been shown to
be either a CIA stooge or a fool. And a friend of Gorbachev.
To cut a long story short Sludge’s contacts say Garrison is CIA too.
They also say Garrison’s spa bath therapy had a little more bite than met the eye. Here we are talking about chemical
assistance for the participants, and the weird part of this tale.
The fashionable drug of the moment, M.D.M.A., ‘E’ or Ecstasy was invented in San Francisco. E is a high-tech, highly
researched drug, which is 1) relatively safe to use, 2) not addictive and 3) which makes its users feel empathetic both
to fellow human beings and to the world at large.
It has been widely reported that the CIA and Department of Defence conducted psychoactive drug research programmes in
San Francisco from the 1950s on. It is also known that the CIA and DoD was involved in the research behind MDMA, just as
they are in most public research conducted in the USA.
We also know now that MDMA’s introduction to widespread public use came in the late 1980s, around the time of the fall
of the Berlin Wall.
Which takes us back to Gorbachev in the Kremlin, in Moscow, in 1989, with his friend Jim Garrison living somewhere
nearby presumably.
The change of heart in the Kremlin which led to the end of the Cold War was sudden and dramatic.
It was not, it seems, accompanied in greater Russia by a widespread public desire to surrender to the West.
The change of heart in the Kremlin is in fact exactly what you might expect to have happened had Gorbachev and his inner
advisors suddenly started feeling empathetic to their fellow human beings..
And so in Sludge’s tale the circle is completed by Gorbachev’s close post Cold-War buddy Jim Garrison. Who would have
been perfectly placed to have been the supplier, who knew all the right people, and who still seems to have a tie to
Mikhail.
And so there you have it. Sludge’s strangest tale yet.
The Cold War was finally won in 1989 with a secret CIA chemical weapon, MDMA. Gorbachev was the happiest Russian leader
of the 20th Century for a good reason.
While there is clearly several tonnes of supposition in the above, there is also, Sludge thinks, a kernel of truth.
After all no body can deny that drugs are something the CIA have had lots of experience with.
In the days of Ollie North and Ronald Reagan the CIA were the biggest cocaine smugglers of them all, and clearly former
President George Bush Senior, a former CIA Chief, wasn’t too heavy about his son, present President George W. Bush’s
coke habit.
