Scoop Feedback: 'Priceless' Continues To Provoke

Published: Mon 12 Feb 2001 11:31 AM
Editor,
As a member of the "United States citizenry" (as letter wrter Chris Petrousky puts it), and as someone who, (apparently unlike Petrousky), remembers the days when "dishonesty" and "shadiness" in the White House meant selling missiles to foreign states in exchange for assistance in rigging a national election and using the money received from said transaction to fund terrorists in ANOTHER foreign state instead of marital infidelity, I feel compelled to let your readers in New Zealand and elsewhere know that yes, Petrousky's asinine viewpoint DOES for the most part represent the rank and file of the Republican Party.
Yes, a Republicans really will believe that portraying the election as "stolen" (which several independent media sources in the US and the UK has confirmed to be true) is "spin", but portraying Al Gore as a child is "truth". Yes, to a Republican, another country's politics can be enjoyed because it "doesn't affect" them. Yes, casually dismissing both the politics and the journalism of an entire nation can be offset by repeatedly and irrelevantly referring to that nation as "beautiful".
Orwell's nightmare is alive and well in the Republican party. I wonder if he'd be more impressed or saddened by the following doublethink: Bill Clinton, a draft-dodger with a supressed history of drug use is a bad, bad man, whereas George W. Bush, a draft-dodger with a supressed history of drug use, is a return to the days of morality and integrity. The Republican Party is at war with Bill Clinton. The Republican Party has always been at war with Bill Clinton.
I'm considering attempting to emigrate to another country as a refugee from an attack on my sanity. I'd looked into Canada and the UK, and wonder if you would recommend New Zealand as well. I figure the fact our illegally-appointed President couldn't find it on a map can only be a benefit.
