Helicopter Upside Down On Mt Vic Summit

Published: Mon 15 Jan 2001 01:28 PM
A pilot is dead and his helicopter lying upside down just metres from the Mt Victoria lookout, after crashing this morning.
Mt Victoria resident Jeremy Martley said he heard a boom as the helicopter crashed just before 9:45. “We were just jumping in the car. We all shot up there straight away. There were tons of people around helping. The cops were there in about three minutes,” he said.
Jamie Wall, who was in Oriental Bay when the Helicopter went down and came up the hill to investigate, said a fireman told him the pilot was dead.
Mr Wall said he didn’t think anyone else was injured or killed in the crash. “I’ve seen it flying before and there was only one guy in it.”
“As far as I know [the helicopter] was doing some work for a developer. He’s doing some work excavating down Palliser Rd. He’s been working for at least three weeks,” said Mr Martley.
Fraser Wilkinson said he could see the crashed helicopter from his work on Courtney Place. “It’s right on the top.”
Police had cordoned off the site this morning and would not offer any information other than one person was dead.
