Guy’s World: A Mouse In A Waistcoat

Published: Fri 6 Oct 2000 06:03 PM
“George sounds like a mouse with a waistcoat on.” That was the only way I could explain why I liked the name George. “No it doesn’t,” said Steve, deadpan. Like a mouse in a waistcoat or not, it was two against one, as my sister, Su, agreed George was a nice name.
We had been trying to think of good names that begin with the letter G. Gary, Greg, Grant. Horrible, all of them, but George was okay. The reason for this discussion was that I have a ring inscribed with the Letter G, and Su seemed to think that I would need to have a son with a G name to pass it on to.
George
This is George the mouse. George was introduced to me by Sylvia, the Scoop cat. Whether through sheer fright, or by massive internal injuries inflicted by Sylvia, George died soon after being captured on digital camera. While George never wore a waistcoat in life, I have given him a digital one, in death. I hope you agree, he does look like a George.
George, like the sun bears and cotton top tamarins in Guy’s World: Zoo And Rock Double Feature, has made an appearance on Scoop in response to a reader’s call for more animal pictures. Agreeing this was a deficiency in Scoop’s coverage, I decided I would rectify it by always including an animal picture in Guy’s World where appropriate, and frequently when inappropriate. It’s the end of a long week for me as acting editor of Scoop, while Scoop editor Alastair Thompson has been taking a break at Pukerua Bay.
With the Olympics over, people’s minds are grudgingly returning to the real world. This week: tough new bail laws were introduced, Telecommunications Inquiry results were released, electricity industry reforms were announced, Don Brash said the ‘S’ word, the dollar withered to under US 40 cents, and everyone’s talking Brain-Drain.
For me it’s been Brain-Fill – information overload - as I’ve dealt with hundreds of press releases, monitored the dollar, and tried to get the important news prominently featured on Scoop. If there are any serious news nuts out there have found my news judgement questionable, sorry. You’re looking at a guy who thinks a mouse in a waistcoat is good column material.

Remember Mary, From Guy’s World: Zoo And Rock Double Feature? In that issue, we had to make do with a stick figure drawing of the band, because my pictures were a little dodgy. This week, I bring you a real photo of Mary – whose album Maryland debuted at number 45 on the charts. If you like candy pop, with a bittersweet edge, buy it. You get three funny videos in the bargain.

Next week: get ready for a trip into the heartland of New Zealand ROCK Friday the 13th is coming, and they’re already cranking up the Marshalls in the Hutt Valley. Too much!!!
