Scoop Images: Wairaka Sentinel Against A Storm

Published: Mon 2 Oct 2000 04:01 PM
Wairaka Rock at Pukerua Bay stands sentinel against a northerly storm that has brought big seas and high rainfall to the Kapiti Coast.
Wairaka is by legend the former lover of Mt Taranaki who was turned to stone in punishment for the illicit relationship. Taranaki too was punished for the relationship and that is why he was sent away from the high plateau. Wairaka rock is said to resemble a woman kneeling down to collect shellfish.
Wairaka.
Wairaka again.
The beach is turned white by the foam.
Birds on the wing.
