Published: Tue 26 Sep 2000 12:53 AM
It is sunny with the odd spot of rain on the corner of Manners and Victoria Sts in central Wellington as an S26 solidarity protest begins in New Zealand’s capital city, signalling the beginning of another global day of protest.
Around 50 protestors are milling around outside McDonalds where Food not Bombs are distributing free vegie burgers to city workers on their lunch breaks.
The vegie burgers are proving popular but so is McDonalds and patrons of McDonalds do not appear to be being intimidated by the protestors.
Police and security guards have removed the protestors from the steps of the restaurant. On a loudhailer a protestor has read a message of support from the group Aotearoa Educators who are in Prague.
Protests are also taking place in Auckland today signalling the beginning of another global day of protest in the tradition of J18 (london), N30 (Seattle), A16 (Washington), Mayday2k(everywhere), Philladelphia, D2KLA (Los Angeles), S11 Melbourne and now today S26 in Prague.
Heavy rain in Wellington stopped around an hour before the protest began.
The protestors are expected to move on to Westpac at around 1pm where they plan to draw attention to WestpacTrust involvement in Uranium mining - following that will conduct a “mystery protest” which organisers say will become apparent “when it happens”.
