Green MPs were at Wellington railway station this morning handing out organic apples to public transport users, as a
thank you gift from the earth.
Green MP Sue Kedgley said this morning that she hoped World Car Free Day, which started in Europe, would become a
tradition in Wellington.
She said in some European cities car free days are like holidays with a carnival atmosphere, where cars are not allowed
to be driven into the city centre. “It’s quite a fun sort of thing to do,” she said.
Ms Kedgley says she would like to see this in Wellington, even if it was on a weekend day. She said the Greens plan to
bring the idea up with the Wellington City Council.
Green MP Keith Locke said car free day was a good opportunity to encourage people out of their cars for environmental
reasons.
