Glitch! Queen's Birthday Bumper Flash
* MEDIA FLASH - seemingly, the only publication in Australia not to be running full-page ads for the JOHN HOWARD - PETER COSTELLO GST - was about to be fullsome in self congratulations about smashing the 6000 subscribers' mark. Instead, it seems our Server let us down, and quite a few of our faithful 6000 didn't receive the June 5 Media Flash. So we've re-transmitted the lot as our Queen's Birthday observance ... two Flashes for the price of one!
Gawenda Fined $20,000
* MICHAEL GAWENDA, Age Editor, was fined $20,000 'for a knowing and serious contempt of court', in Tasmania on Thursday. The newspaper was similarly fined. JUSTICE EVANS said Gawenda approved publication of a report and photograph identifying a sexual assault victim of former Test cricket umpire STEVE RANDELL. 'It is necessary that I impose penalties directed to chastising Mr Gawenda and deterring the respondents and others from acting in a similar manner in the future,' the Tasmanian Supreme Court judge said on Thursday. Age Publisher STEVE HARRIS said his paper was the only one to be prosecuted, although others available in Tasmania had identified the victim. Justic Evans said Gawenda was wrong to deal with publication as if he had a discretion: "His clear obligation was not to authorise dissemination of the material in Tasmania, regardless of his assessment of the risks involved
Psst! Wanna Buy A Cheap Radio Station
* MARK DAY'S 'On Media' column (The Australian) this week reveals a loophole enabling radio station licence frequencies to be obtained from the Australian Broadcasting Authority for as little as $2400. This compares somewhat favorably to the $155,000,000 paid by PAUL THOMPSON for DMG's new Sydney FM licence. BRAD SMART'S Pinecam Pty Ltd has just obtained an outback Queensland licence, plus a $720 Australian Communication Authority frequency licence, to broadcast on the 1629 frequency, in addition to his 4VL station at Charleville. The 'cheap' frequencies are just above or below the range of current official accepted AM band. SID MERHI has several frequencies in Sydney and Newcastle, including 2ME (1638). Day says Merhl has a total of 83 licences 'in every capital city and every major regional centre'.
Northern Times Apologises For Fireworks Fury
* GAVIN LAUMAN, Editor of Brisbane's Northern Times, has published an Editorial to apologise for the newspaper publishing Trilby Misso Lawyers' half-page ad - 'Injured By Fireworks?' - following a tragedy where local student DOMINIQUE BAXENDELL was killed. The Quest Newspapers executive oversaw the comment: 'Some of our readers have told us bluntly that they were let down by our publication of an advertisement referring to the fireworks tragedy at the Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School. The client who placed the advertisement has apologised in this week's edition. Readers have described the advertisement as insensitive. We have to agree. The Times regrets any distress caused to our readers, particularly those involved in the tragedy. Checks are being put in place to ensure this does not happen again.' THE GOOD NEWS: Ad Manager ART CONNELL'S schedule included a second half-page from
PMP Uses Its Imagination
* BOB MUSCAT, CEO of PMP Communications, has announced a joint venture company to move its magazine titles on to the Internet, television and print. JANE SCHULZE of The Age reported on Friday that the JV with Imagination Entertainment (headed by SHANE YEEND) forms Pacific Imagination Online. A CEO is being sought for the JV. Each partner will tip in under $1 million, and Net titles to be developed include TV Week, New Idea, That's Life and TV Hits. Muscat was quoted to say: "We want to find ways of leveraging the existing relationships with readers and if that extends us into other areas of media that's fine."
Skeggs Gonged
* BRUCE SKEGGS, founding Editor of TV Week in 1957, was honored in today's Queen's Birthday Honors, being awarded a Medal (OAM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia. Skeggs, chairman of Melbourne community radio station 3INR-FM, was given his award for services to harness racing and politics. The former Victorian State Parliamentarian was MD of Cabon Publishing, and Editor of the Australian Trotting Register. He started his career at The Argus, 1950-56, and was instrumental in the launch of Melbourne's Channel 31 'Northern Access'.

* FRED HILMER, Fairfax CEO, circularised Sydney staff on Thursday: "Effective July 3, 2000, we will be combining the commercial and support functions of The Sydney Morning Herald and the Sun-Herald.
