Disastrous Poll For Alliance

Published: Mon 15 May 2000 11:13 AM
It’s doldrums time for the Alliance with the most recent One News Colmar Brunton Polls showing the junior coalition partner is languishing below the margin of error.
The poll of a thousand people on Sunday night would also indicate the long lasting honeymoon period for the Government is beginning to end.
While Labour still has a commanding lead over National, support has dropped to under 50 per cent for the Government for the first time to 47 per cent. National has increased its lead five per cent to 37 per cent.
But worst hit was the honeymoon partner the Alliance which slumped three per cent to two per cent, on equal footing with New Zealand First. The other member of Government the Greens also would not make it into Parliament with four per cent, while ACT would scraping a fraction over the 5 per cent margin.
Questioned over the low result Leader Jim Anderton has said he was concerned with the low showing, although it was performance over three year period that was more important.
Approval of the Government's performance was down 11 percent to 54 percent, while voters were less optimistic about New Zealand's economic outlook.
While Prime Minister Helen Clark’s personal support has dropped two points to 47 per cent, she far out in front of of her main rival Jenny Shipley who is at 17 per cent in the preferred Prime Minister stakes.
