Urgency Through The Night - 5am Sitting For Cig Tax Hike
– Early this morning the Government passed a tax bill increasing the price of a packet of cigarettes by more than $1 overnight. The house finally rose at close to 5am. The Green Party supported the tax hike – which Green MP Sue Bradford described as “dangerously close to a tax on the poor” and "which looks like it is designed to pay for the West Coast settlement" – on the basis of an assurance provided that there will be money in the budget for cessation programmes for low income NZers.
