The Herald newspaper said today it would appeal the name suppression of the American billionaire caught importing over
100 grams of cannabis into the country.
Lawyers for the Herald said they would take the appeal to overturn the man's name suppresion order to the High Court. A
date has not yet been fixed but lawyers said the appeal was expected to take about half a day.
The lawyers also said they would apply to make public the information in the submissions the Billionaire’s lawyer Marie
Dhyrberg gave to the judge which explained the circumstances why the man’s identity should be kept from the New Zealand
public.
On the February 8th Otahuhu District Court Judge David Harvey ruled he did not have the authority to overturn his grant
of permanent name suppression on the billionaire.
Judge Harvey earlier granted name suppression to the billionaire at his trial in Auckland in early January.
The billionaire was given a discharge without conviction after he gave NZ$53,000 to Odyssey House, a New Zealand drug
rehabilition centre. He has since left the country.
