Peter Doones Days Are Numbered
The government looks set to decide the future of beleaguered Police Commissioner Peter Doone this week at Cabinet’s first meeting of the year on Tuesday.
Cabinet members are understood to be reading the findings of an inquiry into an incident on November 27 when Doone and his girlfriend Robyn Johnstone were pulled over by a police patrol in Wellington.
The car was stopped because it was driving without lights. After Mr Doone’s conversation with a police constable the couple drove off without the driver Ms Johnstone, being breath tested or spoken to.
Mr Doone and the constable involved are believed to have sharply differing recollections of the incident. The inquiry was being handled by the Police Complaints Authority and Deputy Commissioner Rob Robinson.
Last week a lawyer for Mr Doone threatened a weekend newspaper, which had closely followed the case, with defamation proceedings.
