Scoop Images: Mountaintop Celebration Of Y2k

The following images were taken on New Years Eve and New Years Day atop Mt Narawhia the highest point on Arapawa Island in the Marlborough Sounds. Mt Narawhia at 535m tall and with a clear view of the horizon over the sea is an ideal place to watch the sun rise - when it is not in the middle of a cloud that is!
The bonfire is underway as night falls.
Tessa Thompson and partner Sven celebrate in the traditional way at midnight.
Walt and Betty Rowe whose settlement on Arapawa Island in the early 70's ultimately led to these celebrations being held in this location.
