Rape Crisis applauded today a minimum sentence of 12 years imposed on the man took a boy in his care out on the town to
rape.
"Dean Hiroki chose to take the boy in his care, whose rehabilitation he was meant to be aiding, and he directed and
encouraged the boy to accompanny him in this savage attack," said Claire Benson, National Spokeswoman for Rape Crisis.
"The sentence of preventative detention with a minimum of twelve years to be served acknowledges the major role that
Dean Hiroki played and the effect of his influence on the boy in his care."
Dean Hiroki was first convicted as a youth aged 17 for attempted rape, and has a history of sexual offending. Rape
Crisis believes that he should also be encouraged to complete a rehabilitation programme for sex offenders. Rape Crisis
is calling on Child Youth and Family services to provide increased safety and monitoring of caregivers appointed by CYF;
and for the new government to resource the new department adequately to do this.
"It is incredible that the department that works directly to ensure the safety of children should have placed this
vulnerable boy in such a dangerous environment," said Ms Benson.
