Drugs, Batteries And Small Mammals!!! - More To Y2k Than You Thought
Ensuring you have a supply of prescription medicines, spare batteries for radios and torches, and three days supply of
pet food are all being advised by the Canterbury millennium network. Made up of key Canterbury public sector
organisations, the network is advising people on local conditions for being Y2K ready and what to expect on the night,
through a $15,000 advertising campaign being launched this week.
The campaign, starting today (30 November 1999), will include newspaper and radio advertising as well as inclusion in
the Christchurch City Council newsletter Christchurch City Scene.
“It’s important the Canterbury people know what’s happening in their area as Y2K approaches,” said Richard Johnson,
Chairman of the Canterbury Regional Council, and spokesperson for the network’s organisations.
“This advertising campaign will give residents the details of how they can prepare. But we should all remember that Y2K
is not the only event with the potential to disrupt our lives – we should be prepared for other emergencies as well,
such as floods and earthquakes.”

Christchurch Mayor, Garry Moore praised the co-operation of the agencies involved. “I think there is one big lesson for
us all here in how everybody can get over the usual cross sector turf battles and squabbles quick smart if there is a
real, or imagined, threat to fight. ... Thanks to this co-operative effort it looks pretty much like Y2K should come and
go without too much trouble.”
The radio campaign will be hosted by Keith de Dulin and Allanah James, on behalf of the organisations.
Organisations in the Canterbury millennium network include: the Canterbury Regional Council, Christchurch City Council,
Police, Fire Service, Orion, Department of Conservation, Canterbury Health, After Hours Surgery and St John Ambulance.
This is the first time these groups have worked together for a joint advertising campaign.
